It’s always heartbreaking to see dogs abandoned — the sadness is often visible on their faces.

However, there are compassionate individuals who step up to offer these animals a second chance. Such was the case for one puppy, whose life took a positive turn after being left at a shelter.

Last week, the Pennsylvania SPCA discovered a five-month-old Cane Corso/pit mastiff puppy tied to a pole outside their Philadelphia location.

Alongside the puppy was a simple note that read: “Good Puppy. House Broken. Don’t Have A Name.”

Although the dog seemed physically healthy, her eyes were filled with discharge that “made her look as if she had been crying,” as described in a Facebook post by the SPCA.

“We literally had to wipe away the tears from her eyes,” the post shared.

“Our hearts broke for her. She was so frightened… At only five months old, this sweet girl had likely been abandoned by the only family she had ever known.”

“But now, she was safe with us.”

The SPCA gave the dog the name “Minerva.” Despite being scared and heartbroken, Minerva was still gentle and affectionate, and the shelter was determined to give her the second chance she deserved.

Fortunately, Minerva’s story took a happy turn rather quickly. On May 10, the SPCA shared the wonderful news that Minerva had been adopted!

The announcement brought joy to many, with people celebrating the heartwarming outcome. One person commented, “Congratulations to beautiful Minerva and her equally beautiful forever family. Thank you for adopting this sweet baby and giving her such a wonderful home.”

Another added, “Ohhh look at those smiling faces! You are amazing! She’s going to be spoiled! No more tears for her!”

While Minerva’s story has a happy ending, her case is far from unique. Sadly, many dogs like her are being abandoned at shelters at an alarming rate, and the SPCA is urging people to consider adopting.

“We are seeing an increase in dogs being abandoned on our property,” the Pennsylvania SPCA shared. “Owner surrenders are on the rise, and unfortunately, adoptions have slowed down significantly.”

“Every day, dogs just like Minerva are arriving. We’re rescuing animals from cruelty and neglect, saving them after they’ve been abandoned. And we are holding onto hope that loving families will step forward to adopt them.”
