A dog named Buddy that was intentionally burned by a child has regained his sight

A Labrador retriever named Buddy was found in shock on Peavine Road in Tate County on April 22, his face severely burned and blackened after being set on fire. Days later, the Tate County Sheriff’s Office announced that a child under the age of 12 was responsible for the horrific act, but due to the child’s age, no criminal charges could be filed.

The Tunica Humane Society took Buddy under their care. Although they shared the frustration of being unable to press charges against the child, the volunteers and staff chose to focus on Buddy’s recovery and rehabilitation instead. And they did just that.

Remarkably, Buddy remained a joyful dog despite his ordeal. His tail wagged constantly, and he soaked up the love and care from the staff and volunteers at Mississippi State Veterinary College, where his treatment and recovery were ongoing.

“Imagine closing your eyes and seeing the world as this sweet yellow Lab, Buddy, does today. His last clear memory of sight was the terrifying moment just before his face was set on fire by a child. In an instant, his entire life changed. Due to the severity of his injuries, Buddy has spent the last three and a half months in total darkness, with bandages covering his eyes to protect his wounds,” the Tunica Humane Society shared on Saturday.

But now, Buddy’s bandages have been removed, his eyes are open, and he is aware. And the incredible news is that Buddy can see!

“As Dr. Swanson recounted the moment when Buddy looked into her eyes for the first time, the moment he eagerly jumped up to thank his caregivers for saving him, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for all that was done to rescue him from the unimaginable abuse he suffered.”

Buddy still requires some additional procedures on his eyelids to ensure they blink properly and provide better protection for his eyes. He will continue to stay under Dr. Swanson’s care at Mississippi State until he is healthy enough to return to the Tunica Humane Society.

“But today marked a significant milestone for this precious yellow Lab. He can see again, and his heart is filled with happiness… And our hearts are rejoicing with him.”

We are all so proud of you, Buddy! You are a true hero.
