Just as Mary gave birth to Jesus, this stray dog delivered seven puppies on a straw-strewn barnacle.
In Palenque’s central square, a grand Nativity scene was displayed under a modest tent. The traditional Christmas figurines were peacefully arranged, but an unusual addition caught attention—a pregnant dog seeking refuge.
Reports indicate that the charming dog selected the Nativity scene as a safe haven, escaping the frigid streets and, if needed, providing some extra warmth. Local journalist Eric Guzmán observed and discovered her nestled comfortably inside the straw.
Eric focused his attention and noticed that the dog had given birth to seven puppies. It seemed the dog had chosen the Christmas nativity scene as the safest and most welcoming place for her litter.
Eric shared with The Dodo, “I was both surprised and delighted to find the puppies in such a secure environment. They were never cold or wet. Although Palenque is usually warm throughout the year, temperatures drop around December, and dogs are often seen seeking shelter from the harsh weather.”
After Eric began sharing the story of the dog and her puppies, many residents of Palenque have visited the manger to see them, with some even bringing refreshments. The local government has also agreed to allow the family of dogs to remain as long as needed.
To ensure the ongoing care of the dogs, the animal advocates from Dejando Huellitas SOS Palenque have taken action, seeking permanent homes for them and alluding to their remarkable story.
Eric might not view the puppies’ birth in the Christmas manger as a miracle, but he acknowledges its importance. The journalist expressed his hope that people would become more aware of stray dogs and choose to adopt them instead of buying pets. He emphasized, “We should show love to them regardless of their origins.”
