Kayla, a sweet white dog with big, sad eyes, was having a very lonely birthday. She had been at the animal shelter for what felt like forever. Every day was the same: waking up in a cold, empty kennel, eating the same bland food, and hoping that someone would come to take her home.
Today, her birthday, was no different. She had been dreaming of a warm, cozy bed to sleep in, a loving family to play with, and maybe even a birthday bone. But as the day went on, she realized that her dreams were far from reality.
Kayla watched as the other dogs in the shelter played together, their tails wagging happily. She longed to join in their games, but she was too shy and scared. She just curled up in a ball in the corner of her kennel and tried to forget about how sad she felt.
As the sun began to set, Kayla let out a small whimper. She was so tired of being alone. She closed her eyes and wished upon a star that someone would come and rescue her.
