The dog with a unique genetic condition is often overlooked by potential owners who consider him unattractive, even though his current owner loves and cares for him deeply.
Every puppy is lovable. Regardless of any special needs, lasting scars, or unique traits, these animals are wonderful and worthy of admiration. A dog named Walter had been unintentionally left in a shelter. The reasons for why this dog was often overlooked deeply saddened one animal lover’s heart. A shelter employee greeted Gabby, who was already there to rescue another dog.
“Hey Gabby, you’ve got to see this dog,” the volunteer said. Knowing that Gabby had a knack for helping dogs with specific needs, the volunteer hoped she might be able to find Walter a permanent home. The moment Gabby saw Walter, she knew he was different from other dogs. She had never seen a dog with such a pronounced underbite or one this small. His spine and legs were clearly misaligned. A hush fell around Gabby as she resolved to introduce herself and take Walter in.
Gabby recognized that Walter was unique and different from other dogs, and she understood the harsh reality he faced. With his specific needs and the difficulty of finding him a home, Walter might be waiting a long time for adoption or face euthanasia at the shelter. Most people walked by Walter’s kennel with frowns, some even considering him unattractive. But not Gabby! She saw him as wonderful and admired him.
At that moment, the kind woman knew she had to take Walter home and adopt him herself. Gabby immediately dismissed any thoughts of the dog’s “flaws.” To her, Walter was perfect. It didn’t matter that he looked different from other dogs or might not have a long life; what mattered was that he was capable of love, and Gabby could ensure his happiness.
Walter has a rare genetic condition known as Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI). Unfortunately, it’s a progressive and terminal illness. This means Walter may not have a long life, but he can still have a good one. From the moment they arrived home together, Gabby knew Walter was special. He always had a smile on his face. Even though running was difficult, he eagerly tried to walk as much as he could. Despite the physical strain it caused him, Walter kept moving. Gabby found joy in watching him persevere.
When Walter came home, Gabby began with physical therapy using a small kiddie pool. Walter was overjoyed, and the water therapy greatly enhanced his physical condition. Next, it would be time to start tidying up the yard. Throughout it all, Walter’s mother remained a constant source of encouragement, and he was determined not to let anything prevent him from reaching her.
Gabby believes her connection with Walter is deeply rooted in the fact that her father passed away from multiple sclerosis. In the video below, she reflects on how her father demonstrated immense strength despite suffering from a similar disability in his final years. This experience gave Gabby a new perspective on those who endure hardships but continue to persevere. When she observed Walter’s positive demeanor, she was reminded of her father and the challenges he faced.
