In May 2022, a distressing incident occurred in Thousand Palms, California, where a Chihuahua puppy was found with an arrow piercing her neck. A resident discovered the injured 4-month-old female puppy after hearing her cries. The Riverside County Department of Animal Services responded promptly, and veterinarians successfully removed the arrow, which had miraculously missed vital arteries. The puppy was expected to make a full recovery.

Animal Services Director Erin Gettis expressed shock and disgust at the act, stating, “For someone to willfully shoot this poor pup with an arrow is disgusting.”

Veterinary technician Emily Ellison, who assisted in the puppy’s treatment, added, “I cannot imagine why anyone would do something so terrible to such an innocent creature.”

Authorities urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Riverside County Department of Animal Services. The puppy’s resilience and the swift actions of the community and veterinary team highlight the importance of vigilance and compassion in addressing animal cruelty.

According to a statement from Riverside County Animal Services, a woman called 911 after discovering a Chihuahua puppy in Desert Hot Springs on Monday. She heard the four-month-old puppy “screaming” and found that an arrow had been shot through its neck. A sheriff’s deputy responded, picked up the puppy, and handed her over to an animal services officer, who then took her to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus.

Thankfully, the arrow narrowly missed the puppy’s vital arteries, and veterinarians were able to successfully remove it.

Animal Services Director Erin Gettis expressed her disgust at the cruel act, stating, “For someone to willfully shoot this poor pup with an arrow is disgusting. We are shocked and hope someone can provide us any information as to who did this.”

Gettis added that they are committed to the puppy’s full recovery and will work on finding her a loving home.

Veterinary technician Emily Ellison shared her sentiments, describing the puppy as sweet and wondering why anyone would commit such a cruel act: “I cannot imagine why anyone would do something so terrible to such an innocent creature. It’s very sick.”
