A shelter dog, heartbroken after seeing her best friend get adopted without her, retreats into sadness

Last month, Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) responded to a call about two dogs spotted darting through the bustling streets of Oklahoma City. While rescuing multiple dogs simultaneously is a regular occurrence for SAW’s dedicated team, they quickly noticed an exceptional bond between these two canines.

“They traveled who knows how far,” remarked Ashlie Jerkes, an animal care worker at SAW, “but they always stayed together.” Welcomed with open arms by the shelter staff, the duo was affectionately dubbed Bonnie and Clyde. Their unwavering bond persisted even within the safe confines of the shelter. “They spent their stray hold in the same kennel,” Jerkes recounted, “and even now, they remain inseparable.” Despite their uncertain past, Bonnie and Clyde’s resilience and devotion to each other served as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of companionship amidst adversity.

After spending three days together, resting and receiving necessary medical care, Bonnie and Clyde persevered through their heartworm treatments and gradually recovered enough to be considered for adoption. The bond between them was evident as they eagerly reunited on the adoption floor whenever temporarily separated. “Whenever we let them out, they would just run together,” Jerkes fondly recalled. However, fate took a different turn as Clyde was adopted by a loving family, leaving Bonnie behind at the shelter. The devastated pup visibly missed her closest companion, casting a shadow over her hope for a forever home. Moved by Bonnie’s plight, a compassionate welfare worker captured a poignant photo of her lying forlornly on her cot and shared it on the shelter’s social media page in a heartfelt plea. “Bonnie is all alone now that her brother has found a home,” the post lamented, “and she dearly misses the comfort of a sibling’s embrace.”

Fortunately, their prayers were answered sooner than expected. “The post went up on Friday, and by Monday morning, someone had already come in to adopt her,” Jerkes happily reported. Bonnie, at long last, has found her forever home, and her joy is palpable. “She’s already getting comfortable!” exclaimed Brayden Routh, Bonnie’s new adoptive mother, in a Facebook comment. “She’s going to have the most wonderful life, filled with adventures alongside her new big sister, a blue heeler mix.” The outpouring of support and quick adoption of Bonnie not only warmed the hearts of the shelter staff but also highlighted the power of social media in connecting deserving animals with loving families.

Bonnie’s adoption happened just a few days ago, yet already, her new family cherishes her as if she’s been with them forever. While she holds onto cherished memories of her time with Clyde, Bonnie eagerly anticipates the adventures that await her in her new life. Adjusting seamlessly to her loving environment, she’s already exploring her surroundings with curiosity and soaking up affection from her new human companions. The bond between Bonnie and her new family grows stronger each day, a testament to the joy and fulfillment that adoption brings to both pets and their adopters.
