Shelter Dog Rescues Best Friend Hours Before Euthanasia Following Viral Hug

Due to irresponsible pet owners who abandon them without a second thought, countless dogs end up roaming the streets.

Efforts to address this issue are limited by the finite space and resources available at each rescue center for caring for animals temporarily. When shelters cannot find homes for their animals, they may be forced to consider euthanasia.

Euthanasia in shelters is a contentious issue with broad implications. Some shelters resort to euthanizing animals—a term that denotes a quick and humane death—to make room for new rescues.

Many animal advocates argue that euthanasia should be reserved for animals in severe distress to prevent the spread of disease to other shelter residents. Although some shelters have adopted this approach, others continue to use more traditional methods. In this case, these two dogs were facing the prospect of being euthanized within the next few hours.

In a kill shelter, every dog has a set deadline, and unfortunately, Kala and Keira were nearing the end of theirs. The two puppies have been inseparable since their arrival at Georgia’s Etowah Valley Humane Society (EVHS) animal sanctuary in 2015, sharing a room and living their entire lives together.

With euthanasia imminent, their only hope was to find rescuers who could take them in before time ran out. Many compassionate individuals rallied to spread the urgent call for help.

Upon learning about the plight of these beautiful dogs, volunteers from Angels Among Us Puppy Rescue were deeply moved. Although they couldn’t provide foster homes themselves due to a shortage, they committed to finding temporary care or, ideally, a permanent adoption for the puppies.

The rescuers captured a poignant photo of Kala carrying Kierra to share their story on social media. In this emotional portrayal, Kala made a heartfelt appeal for both herself and her best friend.

In a bid to find someone who could rescue the two dogs, the stunned and sorrowful readers began spreading their story. As the message gained traction, a man saw it and rushed to the shelter to retrieve the dogs.

Grateful for his help, the dogs showered him with kisses, and he warmly embraced them. Kala and Kierra are now well-cared-for and happily settled in their new homes with their new families.

When the man’s attempt to foster the puppies temporarily didn’t work out, they were still without a permanent home. However, three months after the photo was shared publicly, Kala and Kierra finally met their new owners, Pam Cody and Wendy Newman.

The puppies found ideal companions in Pam and Wendy, as Kala and Kierra shared a room with them and quickly became their best friends. It’s remarkable how the photo helped improve their situation and led them to the perfect forever home.
