Today is my birthday, but I have to leave my owner forever

Today is my birthday, but I have to leave my owner forever. My name is Bo, and I’m a golden retriever. I have spent every day of my life with my owner, Lily, who rescued me from a shelter when I was just a puppy. For the past five years, we have shared countless adventures and heartwarming moments together. From the very first day she brought me home, I knew I had found my forever friend.

Lily always made my birthdays special. Last year, we celebrated in the park with my dog friends, delicious treats, and a cake made just for me. But this year feels different. As I lie on my cozy bed, I can sense that something is wrong. Lily has been acting strangely. She has been sad, her eyes filled with tears as she strokes my fur gently. Today, I sense it’s a farewell more than a celebration.

As I look up at her, I wish I could tell her how much I appreciate everything she has done for me. The long walks, the playful games of fetch, the warm cuddles on cold nights—all of it fills my heart with joy. I can’t understand why today, the day meant for happiness, feels so heavy. It is as if a storm cloud hangs over us, darkening the joy of my birthday.

Later in the day, Lily takes me to our favorite spot—the one where we used to play with sticks and chase butterflies. I can see her trying to smile through her tears, but it breaks my heart to see her so distressed. She kneels beside me, hugging me tightly as if trying to capture every moment we’ve shared. “I love you so much, Bo,” she whispers. “You’ve been my best friend, and I’ll always cherish our time together.”

In that moment, I understand. Lily has to say goodbye because she wants me to be free from the pain I’ve been feeling lately. I know my body has been failing me; my legs can no longer run as fast as they used to, and the excitement of our daily walks has faded. I’ve tried to be strong for her, but I can see that she knows I’m suffering.

As the sun sets, casting a golden glow across the park, I feel a sense of peace wash over me. I want to reassure her that it’s okay; that I will always be with her in spirit. I lick her hand softly, letting her know how much she means to me. No matter where I go, the love we shared will never fade.

I take one last look at the beautiful world around me—the vibrant colors of the flowers, the sounds of laughter in the distance, and the warmth of Lily’s love. Though today is supposed to be a celebration, it has become a bittersweet farewell. I know that even though I am leaving, I will always hold her in my heart, just as she has held me in hers.

With my last breath, I find comfort in knowing that I’ve lived a life filled with love and happiness because of her. Today, on my birthday, I say goodbye, but I also celebrate the beautiful bond we shared. Thank you, Lily, for giving me a life worth living. I will always be your loyal companion, watching over you from above.
