In a dramatic and touching rescue video, a woman shows how her dog was trapped underground for 56 hours before being pulled to safety. According to a TikTok post by her owner, Poppy Vernon, Flossie, a teacup dog, had unfortunately passed away on April 25. The footage depicts a deep hole being dug as the rescuers attempted to reach the nine-year-old dog, who had become ensnared in a rabbit hole near her home in Deon, England.
The home was surrounded by numerous rat tunnels, and rescuers used subterranean cameras to search for hours. Despite a full night of searching with tracking dogs, Flossie remained elusive. Poppy recalls that a neighbor eventually heard a faint noise coming from behind a bush, leading to the discovery of Flossie by the search dogs.
In the video, rescuer Toby Leary, dressed in a green shirt, extends his arms into the hole and continues to dig until Flossie’s small, lifeless body is visible. He finally managed to free her from her underground confinement.
Although Flossie had lost no weight and was generally unharmed, she had been missing for four days and spent hours in the mud. The video documenting her rescue has garnered over 3.6 million views.
Poppy Vernon shared with the BBC, “We are just grateful to have her back and to be able to give her the cuddles she deserves.”
In a follow-up TikTok, Poppy speculated that Flossie might have dug the tunnel herself, inadvertently trapping herself. She said, “She might have dug herself into a trap.”
Poppy expressed amazement at the successful rescue and promised to be more vigilant with Flossie on future walks. A call for help led to assistance from friends and family, and Flossie was eventually found in a neighbor’s garden and rescued by the Mid District team.
