With so many dogs in shelters all searching for a permanent home, many unfortunately get overlooked, especially those with age, breed, or health issues that make them less appealing to potential adopters. However, occasionally a compassionate person steps forward to make a difference. Such was the case when a 2-year-old girl chose a sick, shy Pit Bull over all the other animals in the shelter.

When Audra Spurio took her daughter to the shelter to adopt a dog, she was surprised when her little girl was drawn to a sickly and mangy Pit Bull. Despite the dog’s condition, the child was unwavering in her choice.

Audra shared with The Dodo, “My daughter wanted to meet this dog more than any other that day at the shelter.” Despite the dog “smelling of mange,” the young girl insisted, “Mommy, that one.”

The dog was allowed to go outside, and Gigi, the shelter worker, said, “I need your help.” The Pit Bull was permitted to play outside, though it remained fearful and timid while the little girl was gentle and affectionate.

While many children might have been put off by the dog’s condition, Gigi saw only a companion in need. The bond between the girl and the dog was evident as they played together, with the girl giving belly rubs and kisses. Audra observed, “I watched this scared puppy melt in G’s hands. She clung to my daughter and wouldn’t let go.”

Gigi pleaded with her mother to bring the Pit Bull home, expressing, “Sick doggie, go home.”

Thankfully, the girl’s wish was fulfilled. She fell in love with the sick Pit Bull, now named Scarlett, who has since found a loving new home. Audra informed The Dodo that Scarlett is doing much better and is thriving in her new environment.

The story of Gigi and her deep love for animals has touched nearly 14 million YouTube viewers, many of whom are hopeful for the future. What a kind and caring young soul! We’re delighted that Scarlett now has a loving family and a warm home.
