Just one week ago, ThisIsHouston, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing dogs that others might choose to euthanize due to severe illness or injury, introduced Daphne to their supporters. Daphne’s story is unfortunately common among the dogs that enter rescue organizations: she was found as a stray in dreadful condition. At just six months old, it was astonishing that this young German shepherd puppy had survived at all. The rescue team quickly transported her to their emergency veterinarian partner, where she was diagnosed with a fever, anemia, and dehydration.
Her condition was dire. Initially, her skin and coat appeared in terrible shape, but once shaved, the extent of her suffering was even more apparent. Daphne was suffering from two types of bacterial and yeast infections covering her entire body. Due to her severe malnutrition and overall condition, she was at risk of developing refeeding syndrome.
The question that tugs at the heart is how someone could watch a puppy deteriorate to such an extent and do nothing. Often, the survival of such animals is uncertain, and updates come gradually. However, it’s crucial to share positive news as soon as it arrives. And now, just a week later, Daphne is on the mend.
Sweet Daphne wants to express her gratitude to everyone who has supported her care and shared her story. Once a lonely and neglected puppy wandering the harsh Texas streets, Daphne’s life has now taken a turn for the better. She has been receiving medicated baths and antibiotics to treat her skin infections. While her skin scrape was negative for scabies, mange has not been ruled out. Daphne is making a remarkable recovery, and we are excited to see her fully healed and her coat restored. Stay tuned for more updates on her journey.
