When Joey Maxwell and his wife first met Maverick at a high-kill shelter, he was just skin and bones. After adopting him, Maverick became part of their family, and they enjoyed six wonderful years together.
When the dog was diagnosed with lymphoma a few years back, Maxwell did everything he could to help his beloved pet battle the disease. The initial round of chemotherapy was effective, but two months ago, the illness returned, leaving the dog unable to move.
The dog’s owner decided to transport Mav in a wagon to make his final days as comfortable as possible. However, this choice initially had a significant adverse effect on Mav’s health.
Maxwell told CBS News that whenever they take the dog out, “he howls at everyone passing by, expecting them to pet him because he believes the entire world is there to show him affection.”
He might be right. The love and support Maxwell and his dog receive are truly remarkable. For example, after sharing their story, Maxwell was given a 50% discount on a wagon, leading both him and the Lowe’s cashier to tear up. With Maverick becoming well-known in Maxwell’s small town, people frequently approach him to offer their affection.
Mav thoroughly enjoys those wagon rides, and as a result, he’s gaining strength each day.
“We’re in a fortunate position because we see how much Mav means to so many people now, and he’s receiving that love back in full measure,” the speaker notes.
Maverick is feeling the positive energy and can now sit up on his own, steadily regaining his strength.
