Less than a year ago, a gentle, young black pittie mix with a sweet temperament was adopted from the Kansas Humane Society. Recently, this dog, named “J-Dog,” was brought to the Wichita Animal Shelter with severe burns covering his back. The injuries, which were at least three days old, suggested he had been suffering immense pain and had little chance of survival when he arrived. Despite his life-threatening injuries, J-Dog showed remarkable resilience and determination to survive.
It was later discovered that J-Dog had suffered from chemical burns, likely inflicted by someone who maliciously threw a burning liquid or chemical on his back. The burns were so severe that his skin was peeling off, leaving deep, open wounds.
The shelter sought assistance, and Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary, a rescue organization based in Spring Hill, stepped in to help. The dog, now named Dwight, is undergoing a challenging recovery process. With daily hydrotherapy, laser treatments, and continuous care, Dwight has been making gradual progress.
According to Julie McNamara, the medical coordinator at the rescue, Dwight is receiving constant bandage changes, IV fluids, pain medication, and, most importantly, love. He wears protective clothing to shield his raw wounds and is in the best possible care. Despite the hardships, Dwight is doing relatively well and continues to fight with a hopeful spirit. Veterinarians and technicians are encouraged by his progress and his will to survive.
Dwight’s case is currently under investigation by the Wichita Police Department. Lieutenant David Neinstedt is working with the person who surrendered Dwight and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Dwight’s resilience and forgiving nature have touched everyone involved in his care. His wagging tail and the gratitude in his eyes inspire those around him to ensure he has a future filled with love and security. Thank you to everyone who has supported Dwight and contributed to his recovery. Your help and compassion are invaluable as we continue to care for this extraordinary dog.
