NORTH TEXAS — Over 100 animals, including dogs, horses, birds, goats, pigs, hamsters, rats, reptiles, and a ferret, were rescued from a property in Erath County after a report of dead animals prompted an investigation.
Following the report, the Erath County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with Animal Investigation and Response (AIR) to initiate a multi-agency effort. This operation involved the Stephenville Police Department Animal Control, the Erath County Humane Society, and Erath County Fire/EMS.
The investigation uncovered deceased animals in various stages of decay and numerous dogs, cats, and livestock living in conditions with insufficient water, food, or shelter.
On Monday, a warrant was executed at the property on CR 712, leading to the seizure of animals from their harsh living conditions. Monica Ailey-Welborn, President of Animal Investigation and Response, stated, “The Erath County Sheriff’s Office undoubtedly saved these animals from a dire fate. We are honored to assist in the warrant service and as part of the emergency temporary sheltering team. The evidence of dead animals and the poor condition of the surviving ones indicates that this suffering had been ongoing for some time. Sheriff Coates and his Deputies have shown a strong commitment to addressing animal cruelty, and AIR is providing the necessary support for these animals.”
The surviving animals are currently under the care of the Sheriff’s office while awaiting a custody hearing. They are being treated at an undisclosed location by veterinarians from AIR, Greeks Creek Veterinary Hospital, and Texas A&M University. AIR responders are working with the sheriff’s department to ensure daily care for the animals until the situation is resolved.
