Malnourished puppies saved from a backyard crate by a Raleigh-based rescue organization

A Raleigh-based rescue organization is working to save two severely malnourished 3-month-old puppies. Nicole Kincaid, the founder of Perfectly Imperfect Pups (PIPs) rescue, described the puppies—discovered abandoned in a crate in a backyard—as “among the skinniest, most emaciated pups we have ever seen.” The puppies were found last week in sweltering summer heat with no food or water, though the exact duration of their abandonment remains unknown.

“Last week, when temperatures reached record highs, we found them in dire condition,” Kincaid said. “We’re not sure how long they had been there, but they were in very bad shape.”

While one of the puppies did not survive, PIPs has managed to rescue and care for the other two. At their age, the puppies should ideally weigh between 10 to 20 pounds, but these severely emaciated puppies only weigh 3 to 4 pounds.

Currently, the puppies are living with a foster family and gradually gaining weight until they are healthy enough to find permanent homes.

Kincaid explained, “Seeing a puppy in such a condition makes you want to feed them everything at once, but it’s crucial to increase their food intake gradually to prevent further health issues. The foster families are doing an amazing job. Sadly, one of their siblings passed away at the shelter, so we are monitoring them closely, but we are eager to see them recover and thrive.”
