The loyalty of our dogs to their owners is undeniable, and despite the sadness of this story, one devoted dog gave his life to protect his family. Early in the morning, Achy Wijaya found his dog nearly lifeless in their yard in Merauke, Indonesia. He recalled hearing the dog barking the night before. Achy was devastated to learn that his beloved pet had been intentionally poisoned, as reported by NtdNews.
“Our amazing dog kept barking, so the thieves didn’t rob us,” Achy shared on her Facebook page. “We had no idea what had happened until we left the house in the morning and discovered our dog had been poisoned by the intruders.”
The tragic details revealed that the family was asleep when a group of thieves arrived, intending to steal their belongings. Despite their dog’s urgent barking, no one checked, thinking it was just the dog reacting to a cat.
The dog suddenly stopped barking, and the next morning, it was found near death, lying in its own vomit with foam around its mouth, a sign of fatal poisoning.
“We wanted to take him to the vet,” Achy said, “but the clinic was closed because it was a Sunday, and here in Papua, the vet usually only treats livestock.”
The family tried to help by giving their dog milk, oil, and coconut milk, but he was too weak and sadly passed away.
As Achy mourned the loss of his courageous dog, who gave his life to protect the family, he recorded the pet’s final moments to preserve the memory and to remind others to take heed when their pets bark.
