When a man noticed that a lovely puppy kept getting returned to the shelter, he decided to investigate why. His initial intention was to help prepare the dog for adoption, but his plans quickly changed. Abe and Abbi, two canine siblings, were transferred from Puerto Rico to New York in hopes of increasing their chances of finding forever homes. Abbi was adopted shortly after their arrival, leaving only Abe in the shelter. The shelter employees believed that Abe would quickly find a home, and they were initially right when a coworker decided to adopt him, as reported by The Dodo’s senior editor, John Handem Piette.
The shelter staff was overjoyed that Abe had found a home, but their happiness was short-lived. Abe didn’t stay away from the shelter for long. Being sociable and well-liked, all the other dogs at the shelter were quite happy to see him return. This recurring situation made the staff wonder what was preventing Abe from being permanently adopted. Abe was adopted again after two weeks, but less than a month later, he was returned once more.
At this point, John and his girlfriend decided to adopt Abe and give him a new name—Bean. They were determined to go to any lengths to keep Bean with them. According to John, the shelter had sent him back twice because the dog was causing so much trouble. As soon as Bean entered John’s house, he started pulling on the leash, chasing birds, and destroying his dog bed and shoes. However, the couple resolved to exercise a great deal of patience in an effort to change Bean’s behavior.
When the coronavirus pandemic began, John and his girlfriend decided to relocate Bean to John’s parents’ house. This significant decision allowed Bean the chance to experience new things, such as seeing snow for the first time and swimming in the family pool. Managing Bean’s enthusiasm became easier as he started playing with the family’s two cats, Simba and Tigger.
Simba, however, did not respond to Bean like the others did. Despite this, when Bean arrived at John’s parents’ house, it was beneficial for everyone. He settled in right away and quickly made himself at home. The couple soon realized that they couldn’t imagine life without Bean and decided to keep him permanently.
The transformation in Bean’s life was remarkable. He went from being a puppy repeatedly returned to the shelter to a cherished member of John’s family. Bean’s journey is a testament to the power of patience, understanding, and unwavering determination. John and his girlfriend’s efforts to help Bean adjust to his new environment were not in vain. Bean began to thrive in his new home, surrounded by love and care.
For John and his girlfriend, adopting Bean was a journey filled with challenges and rewards. They discovered that with enough patience and love, even the most troubled dogs can become wonderful companions. Bean’s story serves as an inspiration to others considering adopting a shelter dog, reminding them that the effort to understand and help a dog in need is always worth it.
Bean now lives a happy life, filled with new experiences and surrounded by people who love him. The couple’s decision to adopt Bean forever changed his life for the better.
