This man welcomes a 16-year-old dog into his home, ensuring the dog spends the rest of his days with a loving family.
We must come to terms with the fact that our dogs won’t live as long as we wish when we have them. Our hope is always to give them the best life possible while they’re with us, as they are a significant part of our lives as well as their own. They deserve everything, and we understand that well.
Upon first encountering an elderly dog named Henry at the Tehachapi, California rescue shelter, Zack Schou, co-founder of Marleys Mutts and the Pawsitive Change initiative, had a similar reaction. The 16-year-old dog was less spry and energetic compared to the other shelter dogs, and his fur showed signs of aging with patches of gray and a coarse texture.
The thought of Henry languishing in those conditions for his remaining years tore at Zack’s heart. In March 2021, compelled by empathy, Zack stepped forward to adopt Henry. He envisioned a future filled with new friendships and exciting adventures for the grateful dog.
Initially, Henry struggled with walking due to his advanced age. Surprisingly, though, this resilient dog diligently worked to regain his energy, and soon they observed him pacing and even running around. Zach, when he was just a puppy, spent his time in the garden. His adoptive father found the news hard to accept.
While at the foster home, Henry was diagnosed with testicular cancer alongside his age-related issues. Thankfully, he successfully overcame the illness through surgery. This dog fought bravely for his life.
According to Zack, Henry wasn’t expected to stay with him for long. Given his advanced age, Zack believed the dog had only a few months left to live. However, to Zack’s surprise, Henry persisted and seemed to grow younger with each passing day.
Despite being pleased with Henry’s progress, Zack decided to find him a new home. Ultimately, Zack wanted to ensure that this lovable dog could enjoy the best years of his life.
Despite his age, Henry had no trouble finding a home thanks to his natural energy and cheerfulness. His new mother adores him and diligently cares for him, even sharing pictures of their adventures on her own Instagram account.
