While volunteering at her local animal shelter, Jess Martin encountered the lovable Staffordshire named Amos, who was born blind. Upon learning that Amos was struggling to find his forever home, Jess immediately invited him into her own. What started as a temporary foster arrangement soon became the place that would profoundly shape Amos’s future.
When Toby, her nine-year-old terrier, met his new foster sibling, Jess was anxious about how he would react. Toby was her closest companion, and they had shared many incredible experiences, forming a strong bond. The thought of expanding their small family was a bit overwhelming. However, after a few days of uncertainty, Toby and Amos developed a deep friendship.
Amos had spent his entire life in a rescue facility and had never lived in a home before coming to Jess. He was unsettled by the feel of carpet on his paws, often ran into walls, and was frightened by the sounds of the TV. For the blind puppy, even simple tasks like finding his water bowl proved to be very difficult.
Initially, Toby was skeptical of Amos, but Jess quickly observed something remarkable. Whenever Toby saw Amos struggling to locate his water bowl, he would gently nudge him in the right direction. What started as occasional assistance soon evolved into Toby taking on the role of a guide for Amos. It was clear to Jess and her family that they had gained yet another cherished friend.
As Amos grew older, an eye specialist examined him and determined that his eyes were likely causing him significant daily discomfort. It was recommended that removing the eyes would be the most humane option. Following the surgery, Toby naturally stepped into the role of Amos’ “unofficial guide dog.”
When Amos and Toby began taking walks together, Amos was initially anxious. The unfamiliar sounds frightened him, and he needed to stop often to rest and regain his bearings. Whenever he was ready to continue, Toby would promptly lie down beside him, providing comfort and reassurance.
Hiking through the hills has become a favorite pastime for the furry best friends! Toby leads Amos across the terrain with gentle body bumps and nudges, and if Amos veers off course, Toby helps guide him back to the right path.
Their relationship is strong, with both showing mutual respect for each other’s limitations.
While Amos has mastered the basics of hiking, he still has much to learn about socializing with other dogs. Many dogs are intimidated by Amos’ lack of conventional dog communication, so Toby often steps in to mediate these interactions. Each day, Jess and Toby collaborate to improve Amos’ social skills!
It’s clear that Toby is the perfect guide and protector for Amos! They have truly found a lifelong friend in each other.
