Recently, I found myself reflecting on the domestication of dogs over 30,000 years ago—a pivotal moment in human history that continues to shape our lives today.
Despite this enduring bond between humans and dogs, it’s heartbreaking to see that some people still mistreat or neglect these loyal companions. While not everyone values this special relationship, there’s hope that we can work together to change this reality and ensure a better future for every pup.

Living in Terrible Conditions
When a rescuer from Stray Rescue of St. Louis learned about a dog living in appalling conditions and in desperate need of help, she wasted no time responding to the call.
It took some effort to locate the place, but when she finally arrived, the sight was disheartening. The area resembled a garbage-filled yard, littered with disposable waste and neglect.
As she explored further, she spotted the dog. He was tied to a cage with a makeshift leash, lying there scared and uncertain of his fate.
The dog, named Harwell, seemed wary and confused as the rescuer approached. Unsure of her intentions, he hesitated to move closer. To build trust, she offered him food, a small gesture that brought some light to his otherwise bleak situation.
When Harwell finally stood up, the extent of his suffering became painfully clear. He was alarmingly underweight, weighing just 18 pounds, and his frail frame showed the effects of severe malnutrition.
It was likely the first meal he’d had in a long time, and imagining the hardships he must have endured to reach this point was nothing short of heartbreaking. Harwell desperately needed help, and thankfully, his rescue had just begun.
Rescued at Last
Once Harwell realized his rescuer was there to help, a glimmer of hope seemed to spark within him. His tail began wagging—a small but powerful sign that he was starting to trust her. It was hard to imagine the last time he had felt anything close to hope or kindness.
With trust established, the rescuer gently removed the poorly-made leash from his neck and carefully brought him to her car. Harwell’s days of suffering were finally coming to an end.
He was taken to the Stray Rescue of St. Louis shelter, where the compassionate staff immediately began working to nurse him back to health. They focused on helping him regain his strength and reach a healthy weight. For the first time in a long while, Harwell was surrounded by care and love.
Though his future is still unfolding, one thing is certain: Harwell will never be alone or neglected again. His rescuers are now searching for the perfect foster home, someone who will give him the love and security he so desperately deserves.
With so many dedicated people working to ensure his happiness, it’s only a matter of time before Harwell finds his forever family and the wonderful life that’s been waiting for him.
